HEJS 3279/CLCS 3201 | Literature of Modern Israel This course is a survey of modern literature, prose and poetry, from Israel. We will sample writing from the pre-State period through the early State (1950s, 1960s) into the present, reading short stories, poetry, novels, and viewing one recent film. The works I have chosen represent European ("Ashkenazi"), Oriental ("Sephardic"), Israeli-Arab, and gender themes and positions. Together, they explore the complicated voices and tensions that make up Israeli society and literature. |
